Understanding Reverse DNS (rDNS)

Reverse DNS (rDNS) is a system that maps your IP address to a hostname using a PTR (Pointer) record. This is the opposite of regular DNS, which maps domain names to IP addresses.

Each IP address can have only one rDNS record. If you need to configure rDNS for your VPS or dedicated server, here’s how you can proceed.

Why is Reverse DNS Important?

  • Email Deliverability: Many mail servers reject emails from IPs without a proper rDNS setup.

  • Network Security: Some security systems use rDNS to verify the legitimacy of connections.

  • Professionalism: A correctly configured rDNS improves your business's credibility.

How to Request Reverse DNS (rDNS) Setup

Since rDNS configuration is controlled at the IP level, it is managed by Softsys Hosting for our clients. If you need to set up or modify your rDNS record, follow these steps:

  1. Login to Your Client Area

    • Navigate to the client portal.

  2. Submit a Support Ticket

    • Open a support ticket requesting an rDNS (PTR) record update for your IP.

    • Include the IP address and the desired hostname.

  3. Ensure Forward DNS Matches Reverse DNS

    • Your hostname (e.g., server.example.com) should resolve to your IP in forward DNS records (A/AAAA).

  4. Wait for Confirmation

    • DNS updates typically take a few hours to propagate globally.

How to Verify Your rDNS Configuration

Once the update is complete, you can check your rDNS setup using these commands:

  • Linux/macOS Terminal:

    bash
    CopyEdit
    host <your-ip-address>
  • Windows Command Prompt:

    cmd
    CopyEdit
    nslookup <your-ip-address>
