To run a traceroute, please do the following: 1. Click on the Start button in the lower, left corner of your computer desktop 2. Click on the "Run" menu item 3. When the MSDos window opens, type the following (without quotes): "tracert yourdomain.tld" – where .tld is .com, .net, .org, etc. 4. Press your Enter key 5. When the info appears, right click and select "Mark" from the menu 6. Drag your cursor across the information that results from running the trace route, then click the "Enter" key again 7. You can then paste the results in any communication (an email, a forum post, etc.).
A trace route is a method to trace the steps to a destination. For example, going from a site in Arizona to a site in California, your request for information will go through many different pieces of equipment and companies. The numbers on the trace show the time it's taking to travel to each of those locations. Times on the Internet can range from 80ms (milliseconds) to 250ms, which is considered normal during peak hours.
